In Search of our Indian blood

My name is Joseph and I reside in New England. I contacted Marielle A. Bourgeois to ask her if she could trace the baptism or birth certificate of my wife's father who was born on an Indian Reservation, possibly in Canada. I had already asked other researchers, including members of the Québec Archives, to trace his birth certificate. No one had been able to find the document. After about ten hours of research, Marielle did find the baptism of my father-in-law in the Rivière-du-Loup area in Québec, in spite of the fact that the surname had been transformed.

Marielle showed professional skills in dealing with me and my children. I recommend her services to anyone who is serious about tracing his/ her ancestral heritage. In addition to obtaining the document for me, she taught me a lot about Indian tribes from Canada and USA, information I consider historically valuable. In Search of my ancestors: Labossière, Poulin, Florent, Lefort and Lebeau.

It is known that French names of people from New England often had their origins in Québec and I know how to do genealogy research. However, I was stuck for almost a decade tracing documents of my ancestors who carried French names. I was searching for the surnames Labossière, Poulin, Florent, Lefort and Lebeau. I had traced US censuses, along with some death certificates and obituaries in New England newspapers. I could guess some people's birth years and at times birth places in New England and occasionally in the Manitoba province.

My cousin knew that I was having difficulty with my French genealogy lineages. She suggested that I contact Marielle A. Bourgeois, who is a cousin of hers stating that she was born in Québec and is quite good at figuring out name changes, which is a major problem with French people from Québec and other provinces of Canada. I sent my documents and family information to Marielle.

In less than five months Marielle found that the name Labossière was originally Laboissière (with two "i") and came with my migrating ancestor Jean-Baptiste Laboissière, born in France who migrated as an infantry officer in the Company of Tonty. He married in Québec in 1720. My ancestor Emilienne Poulin was born in Québec, but had become “Nellie Colt ” (literal translation of Emilienne Poulin) in New England. She traced the Poulin, Lefort and Lebeau lineages to Manitoba, Québec and France. She discovered the surname Florent changed spellings becoming Florant, Florence, Foyrand, Foiran and Forand.

If Marielle Bourgeois was able to figure out my family ancestry, I feel certain she could help you trace your ancestors. She provides copies of located documents from the countries they came from and, if need be, will translate them for you. Jean. Email: jfernandes522@embarqmail.com

In Search of my ancestors from Acadia (today named Nova Scotia).

My name is Jim and I live in Quincy, Massachusetts, USA. I knew that I carried Acadian blood from my maternal lineage and I had read some of Marielle A. Bourgeois' excellent articles in the American-Canadian Genealogist, published by the American Canadian Genealogical Society. I knew that she could help me trace my Acadian roots, so I contacted her with my ancestors Eugène Cormier and Angélique Allain, whom I had heard lived in New Brunswick around 1850.

Marielle proceeded to search church documents and archives in various places in New Brunswick – Richibouctou Village, Bouctouche, Beaubassin and Grand-Pré. Some of the readers may know that Grand-Pré was a harbor in Acadia from where many Acadians were deported from in 1755, by the British, and years later.

She traced my Cormier lineage all the way in New Brunswick up to the migrating ancestor Thomas Cormier who was born in LaRochelle, Charante Maritime, France in 1636 and died in Beaubassin, Acadia. He married Marie-Madeleine Girouard, whose family came from Loudon, la Chaussée, Vienne, France.

Marielle traced my Allain lineage, also to New Brunswick, all the way to the migrating ancestor Louis Allain, an adaptable individual who was in Acadia as early as 1636, as entrepreneur, blacksmith and sawmill operator. He married Marguerite Bourque, whose parents came from Martaizé, Vienne, France. Marielle and I discovered that we both are distantly blood related as descendants of Jacob dit Jacques Bourgeois, who was the first surgeon who left France in May 1641 to come to "America", and Jeanne Trahan.

I certainly recommend the services of Marielle A. Bourgeois as an excellent genealogist. Jim, Email: jimlap49@msn.com

In Search of my Bushway ancestors in Canada?

I am Elmo Cloutier of Keene, New Hampshire, USA. I could not find my mother's line by the name of Bushway in the United States. I asked Marielle A. Bourgeois for help. She first found a mistake that had been made in one of the records, a wrong name had been recorded on a marriage contract. She then suggested I go to the cemetery where my Bushway ancestors were buried and take photos of the stone inscriptions. With the correction of the name on a marriage document and the knowledge of the birth date of my great grandfather from his stone inscription, she was able to trace my Bushway/ Bourgeois ancestors (for there had been a surname changed in the USA) to Québec and ultimately to LaRochelle, France, in May 1641, when my ancestor, Jacob dit Jacques Bourgeois, surgeon, left France to come to Acadia (today named Nova Scotia).

I have since visited the areas in Canada where my ancestors came from. New horizons are opened to me because of Marielle's expertise and her numerous genealogy contacts. Marielle wrote an article explaining how she conducted my search, which is entitled "Brick Walls" and is part of her bilingual CD-ROM on Acadians and Cajuns which one can buy from her.
